The Garden Dock

The Garden Dock received Second Prize in 2026. The client praised the proposal’s solid documentation and technical insight into building structures.

A garden at the water’s edge. The Garden Dock transforms a timber terrace on Tromøya into a sequence of outdoor rooms. The existing red boathouse, stone quay, exposed rock and wrapping jetty give the project its setting; the landscape proposal develops the spaces between them.

Two planted seating pockets give the open deck distinct places to pause, with different orientations toward the water and one another. A sheltered lounge sits beside the boathouse, while a dining table close to the entrance supports everyday gatherings. Two loose loungers occupy the centre, leaving the deck open to changing patterns of use.

Timber links the floor, seating cases and planter edges. Pale cushions and a warm white canopy frame bring a lighter layer to the weathered stone and red cladding. Low flowers and fine grasses soften the built-in seats, while a planted backdrop gives the sheltered room greater depth. In the evening, recessed seating light and hanging lamps create smaller places to gather within the wider waterfront.

The details continue this approach at the scale of touch and maintenance: eased timber edges, removable cushions, separate planting liners, accessible drainage and replaceable lighting components. Plans, elevations, sections and assembly studies show how the outdoor spaces and their material connections come together.
