For One Another
A Monument to Everyday Care. For One Another is JO’s Atelier’s proposal for Winter Stations 2027 in Toronto, responding to the theme Monument. It imagines a monument that performs an act of care: a place to pause, sit beside another person and share the winter shoreline.
Folded timber planes form a small gathering place. Oxide-red outer faces give the installation a clear public presence, while pale timber turns the enclosure towards its visitors. The folds rise from low benches into tall screens, framing people and the lake without enclosing the sky.
The existing lifeguard stand remains independent and visible beyond the installation. Its familiar role of watching over others becomes the project’s starting point. Here, monumentality is measured through everyday gestures: arriving together, sitting beside a stranger, making room and staying a little longer.
Timber battens, structural ribs and folded plywood lining form the material layers. Workshop prefabrication, removable seats and reversible bolted connections support assembly, removal and reuse. The presentation drawings develop the shared seating, material palette and proposed construction approach.
