Fulton House
Fulton House received First Prize in Arcbazar’s Floor Plan Changes competition.
The proposal reworks a family home in Palo Alto around a clearer sequence from the front door to the garden. Shared living spaces, a more generous dining room and a connected kitchen are organized around everyday movement, while the retained tree courtyard gives the family room a natural focus.
A ground-floor study doubles as a guest room. Upstairs, four bedrooms, a laundry and the primary suite balance shared family life with privacy. An attached accessory dwelling unit has its own entrance, kitchen, laundry and rear bedroom, giving the smaller home an independent daily routine.
Pale oak, warm white plaster, honed stone and textured linen establish a consistent interior palette. Fitted storage, screened transitions and carefully placed lighting bring warmth to the practical spaces, from the mudroom and pantry to the bedrooms and bathrooms.
The coordinated plans connect the overall arrangement to individual rooms. Furniture, doors, windows, working clearances and routes through each space are developed through annotated enlargements, showing how the home supports arrival, gathering, work and rest.
